If you’re considering a career in the automotive industry, explore the role of a diesel mechanic. You can find automotive career training programs, like diesel technology, at Pennco Tech. We’ve trained tomorrow’s workforce in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for over 50 years. Here, we share more information about the average diesel mechanic’s salary so you can understand the earning potential.

What Is a Diesel Mechanic?

A diesel mechanic or diesel technician is a professional in the automotive industry who works with diesel engines and vehicles, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining them. They work on a range of vehicles, including trucks, buses, commercial boats, and even bulldozers and cranes. The typical duties of a diesel mechanic can include:

  • Inspecting engines, brake systems, transmissions, and more to check for potential deterioration
  • Running diagnostic tests and interpreting them to identify problems
  • Performing basic maintenance on vehicles like oil changes and tire rotations
  • Repairing engines or other malfunctioning parts
  • Maintaining electrical and exhaust systems so they comply with pollution regulations
  • Test-driving vehicles to evaluate their performance
  • Interacting with customers to determine the required work and explain repairs

Diesel mechanics often work in repair shops, truck stops, transportation companies, and other related places.

Diesel Mechanic Salary Range

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the median annual wage for diesel service technicians and mechanics was $58,970 in May 2023. The average hourly pay rate for diesel mechanics is $28.31 in Pennsylvania and $32.24 in New Jersey, according to Indeed.

Some diesel mechanics earn more, while some earn less. Pay can be affected by factors like location, place of employment, type of diesel machinery worked on, training and experience level, and more. Some diesel mechanics can also earn overtime or receive commissions on top of their salary.

Diesel mechanics who are interested in boosting their salary potential or career trajectory can obtain relevant certifications. One of the most common is given by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), which helps demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the field. Gaining experience in the field can also help increase earnings over time. Some diesel mechanics choose to specialize in specific types of diesel engines or vehicles like heavy equipment or marine vessels, which can also boost earnings.

Diesel Mechanic Job Outlook and Mobility

Because of their efficiency and durability, diesel engines have become the standard in powering trucks and buses. Other heavy vehicles and mobile equipment, including bulldozers and cranes, also are powered by diesel engines, as are many commercial boats and some passenger vehicles and pickups.

According to the BLS, the employment of diesel mechanics is projected to grow 3% annually through 2033, about as fast as the average for all occupations. There are around 25,600 diesel mechanic job openings expected each year, on average, over the decade. Diesel mechanics will continue to be needed to maintain and repair existing diesel engines.
