Veteran Student Information

Both Campuses of Pennco Tech are approved to offer GI Bill® educational benefits. Veterans and/or eligible students receiving veteran’s benefits may also be eligible for federal financial aid, scholarships, and grants.  It is recommended that a veteran student discuss their options with Pennco’s Financial Services team members before applying for student loans or alternative financing.

To be certified for VA educational benefits, veterans or eligible dependents will be required to furnish certain documents such as discharge records or other VA eligibility forms. Assistance in acquiring, completing, and submitting necessary forms may be obtained from the VA Certifying Official.

The college will certify all veterans and dependents eligible for benefits and report enrollments to the VA. Veterans who have attended other colleges must have official transcripts sent to the Registrar Office prior to certification of eligibility.  In addition, any veteran who may have previous work experience or training may be eligible to receive Credit for Prior Learning and should contact the Pennco Registrar’s office for more information.

Additional information from the Veterans Administration on understanding your benefits can be found here.

Frequently Asked Questions

**How long do I have to use my GI Bill® benefits?**

Once you have separated from the service, you have 10 years to use all of your benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill® and 15 years to use your Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits. If you rejoin active-duty service for more than 90 days during the 10-year period, your 10-year clock is reset. This means you get 10 years from your last discharge.

**Are VA Educational Benefits Taxable?**
No. Veterans’ benefits paid under any law administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are not taxable and should not be reported as income to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You will not receive a W-2 from the VA.

**What is transferable?**
Transferability is determined by the Department of Defense. The service member must have at least six years of service and commit to an additional four years of service to transfer benefits to a spouse or child. A family member must be enrolled in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System DEERS at the time of transfer to receive transferred educational benefits.

**What is the Deployment & Readmission Policy?**
Under the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, a student called to active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reserve for more than 30 days is entitled to re-enroll in the same program, with the same enrollment status, number of credits, and academic standing as when they were last in attendance at Pennco Tech. Readmission is allowed provided the student:

– The cumulative length of absences from the school due to active duty does not exceed five years.
– The student notifies the school upon completion of service that they intend to re-enroll.
– The student has not been discharged from the Armed Forces with a dishonorable or bad-conduct discharge.

**How do I alert Pennco Tech that I wish to use my VA Benefits?**
When applying as a Pennco Tech student, please inform your Admissions or Financial Services Associate that you plan to use VA Benefits for your education.

**When is enrollment verification done?**
Enrollment verification is done after the first week of school. You can expect to receive your first check approximately two months after classes begin.
