About the Diesel Technology Program in NJ

Diesel technicians are called upon to successfully repair and maintain locomotives, large trucks, industrial equipment, and other machinery that relies on diesel power. Given the economy’s reliance on diesel-powered equipment, this occupation can be incredibly rewarding.

Pennco Tech’s Diesel Technology program prepares students interested in exploring this career field. In a hands-on learning environment, students enrolled in the program will learn from industry-experienced instructors and gain the skills and techniques necessary to become qualified diesel technicians. All our instructors have a passion for teaching and a desire to pass on their knowledge to the next wave of diesel technicians.

Through the 40-week program, students will gain experience in a variety of common repairs and tasks, such as:

  • Diesel engine and heavy-duty truck preventive maintenance
  • Fuel injector service
  • Transmission, clutch, and driveline service
  • MIG and TIG welders
  • Air/hydraulic brake system service
  • Emission system diagnosing and repair
  • Truck and trailer lubrication
  • Heating and AC system service
  • Electrical and electronic system service
  • Diagnostics using computer scanners and electronic measuring devices

Additionally, students enrolled in the program will gain experience using the tools and technology of the profession. They walk away ready to take the first steps toward employment opportunities in the field.

Fleet Mechanic

Companies and other enterprises that use a fleet of vehicles to complete business tasks need the services of fleet mechanics to keep operations running smoothly. Individuals in this role are typically tasked with managing inspections, repairs, and everyday maintenance duties involving automotive operations. There are many types of jobs aspiring fleet mechanics can pursue, meaning the profession allows for movement and career advancement.

Heavy Duty Mechanic

The largest equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, trenchers, graders, boom lifts, and excavators, is generally diesel-powered.
